Toronto Jiu Jitsu Classic

Press Release: Toronto Jiu Jitsu Classic
We invite all the true Brazilian Jiu Jitsu academies to help us carry the flag of this sport into the future. Join us on August 9th, 2009 at Ryerson university. This tournament is a celebration of Jiu Jitsu. We are trying to give an opportunity to everyone to become part of the next page in the history of Jiu Jitsu in Canada. This tournament will showcase the sport of brazilian Jiu Jitsu, by being aired on the fight network. We need you to be part of the revolution of this sport in North America. We need to be unified, we need to show solidarity by coming together to honor the tradition of brazilian Jiu Jitsu competition. We want to demonstrate great Jiu Jitsu, we want to show who we are, we want to exhibit the glory of healthy rivalries between teams and how they help the sport to progress, develop, and grow.
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is more than a sport, it is rooted deeply in tradition, and tried and tested methodology since it was founded in Brazil. In this tournament we aim to honor this heritage and lineage by organizing the tournament in the same manner as the International Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Federation. We want to pay tribute to the sport’s founders by not just coming to compete and determine who is best on the day but, we want to live the Jiu Jitsu ideology, philosophy, lifestyle.
This type of competition readies competitors for the highest level of international competition by adhering to international rules, regulations, and standards. We are already seeing the fruits of the Copa Ontario tournament which produced several champions at this years mundial (worlds championships). The Brazilian Jiu Jitsu format of competition had lead to greater things for many of the stars of the sport. Champions like BJ Penn, Marcelo Garcia, Demian Maia, Rodrigo Noguerra, and many more got their starts on the tatami’s of Jiu Jitsu.
What makes the Toronto Jiu Jistu Classic Special?

Meaning of IXOYE and the Jesus Fish

For Christians, the fish is one of their earliest symbols—used to profess their faith and to avoid persecution. Christians chose the fish because of its prominence in Jesus' teachings and because of a famous acrostic (the letters of a word forming the initial letters of a phrase). The Greek word fish—IXOYE—forms the acrostic "Iesous, Christos, Theou, Yios, Soter" or "Jesus, Christ, God's, Son, Savior." Besides serving as a brief profession of faith, the fish also helped Christians distinguish between friend and foe. When traveling, if a Christian met another person, the Christian would draw half the fish (half a crescent) in the sand. If the other person completed the fish, he or she was a Christian. Gal. 6:17 is a reference to St. Paul's letter to the Galatians. Paul writes, "From now on let no one cause trouble for me, for I bear on my body the brand marks of Jesus."

Day 1: Worlds 2009

Everybody is tired. It's a long trip. We are still waiting for Melissa (a.k.a the smurf), Rui is going to pick her up in 1 hour.

Josh, Mikey, and Tommy's luggage just arrived at our hotel. Their luggage somehow got misplaced during our stop-over in Las Vegas (see picture of Jorge playing the slot machine). Tommy's gi was in his luggage, so at least now he has something to wear while competing tomorrow.

Note: Every 4-5 minutes (all day long) Josh get's a call on his phone (which is the academy's number).... And all we've been hearing over and over again is: "Hi! Toronto BJJ, Josh speaking...." (See picture below, where Josh is talking to a potential student instead of talking to the airline about his (and Mikey and Tommy"s) lost bags).
